Problems Downloading or Patching

Whenever you launch Guild Wars 2, the first thing the client does is search for any updates available for the game. If a newer version of the game is available, your client will automatically try to download and update (i.e. “patch”) the game to the latest version. This ensures that you’re always playing with the latest changes and features, and prevents a variety of other issues that can arise by playing on an outdated client.

In rare circumstances, you may encounter a problem that prevents your client from downloading or applying the latest game files. These errors can prevent you from playing the game, which is why we’ve compiled several solutions to help you fix the problems at hand. Read on for these fixes and additional resources to help you work through any errors you’re encountering.

Launcher Errors

"Download failed! Please check your internet connection and try again."

This error appears when your game client is having trouble contacting or communicating with our game servers. As such, you should begin by checking your internet connection:

  1. Verify that you’re connected to the internet via a broadband connection.
  2. Reset your router and modem. Rebooting your devices can help fix several common connection problems, improve slow connections, and clear out any issues stored in their memory.
  3. Reboot your PC. Giving your computer a chance to reset can fix any number of issues that might affect your connectivity to the game.
  4. If you're using a wireless router, unplug the cable that runs from your modem to the router and use it to plug your computer straight into the modem. Reboot your computer and try connecting again. If you are able to connect successfully, the problem may be caused by your router.

If you still experience this error, you can also try these advanced troubleshooting tips. Note that the steps to complete each action below will vary depending on the program you use, so contact the manufacturer of your software if you need help.

  1. Temporarily disable any security software such as Norton, AVAST, AVG, or McAfee, and then re-launch the game.
  2. Try adding to your firewall or security program’s list of allowed connections.
  3. If you still can’t connect, try adding Guild Wars 2 to your antivirus or security program’s list of allowed programs.

"Connection error(s) detected. Retrying..." (Windows only)

This usually indicates a problem connecting to our download servers. You should begin by resetting your network adapter:

  1. Click the "Start" button or press the Windows key to bring up the Start Menu.
  2. Type CMD into the "Search programs and files" field, but do not hit enter.
  3. When the Command Prompt (or cmd.exe) program is displayed in your search bar, right-click the program and select "Run as Administrator." Press Yes if prompted to let the program make changes to your computer.
  4. A command prompt window will open. Type netsh winsock reset into the window, and then press Enter to execute the command.
  5. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation will appear followed by a new command prompt line.
  6. Launch Guild Wars 2 and try connecting to the game.

If that does not address the issue, another program may be interfering with your internet connection.

  1. Try restarting your computer, then launch Guild Wars 2 before opening any other program.
  2. Temporarily disable any security software such as Norton, AVAST, AVG, or McAfee, and then re-launch the game.

"Last time Guild Wars 2 ran, it detected a problem in its game-data."
